From this weeks Manhattan User Guide:BUZZ issue...

For the blog-obsessed, catch the stars of the NY blogosphere in a panel discussion on May 3rd, 6-8, at the Apple Store, 103 Prince [Greene]. You couldn't cast it better: participants include dueling entrepreneurs (Nick Denton and Jason Calacanis), bon vivant Lockhart Steele, British brainiac Felix Salmon, the dynamic duo from Gothamist (Jen Chung and Jake Dobkin), and everyone's favorite crazy aunt in the attic, Choire Sicha.

Looks like I'll have to give up my Microsoftie card and head on down to the Ugghhh..Apple store in SOHO. I highly recommend stopping by. See ya there.

Bloomberg backs off

I know I'm a bit late on this one, but it looks like our esteemed Mayor Bloomberg has come to his senses and decided to put off the cabaret license changes that would threaten bars and clubs across the city.

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said on Wednesday that he would probably put off making any significant changes to the city's cabaret law this year. He had drawn criticism from bar and nightclub owners who opposed his administration's efforts to replace the law with different...

Remember the post on Chicama...the downtown restaurant (in ABC carpet) with great ceviche that I had a $100 gift certificate too that went out of business. Yeah...that one...Anyway, it turns out that a new spot has opened there. It's called Lucy Mexican Barbecue.

On a whim, I decided to call them yesterday to see if they would honor the certificate. Basically the guy told me....Awwww...too bad...we stopped honoring those on December 31st! I said, yeah....but how the hell were people supposed to know that? The phone for Chicama was disconnected and all. Anyway...now I'm really pissed...I mean..I guess if I stand back and look at it I can sort of understand, but you'd think they would want to honor it just to garner some support from new customers who liked the old restaurant which is still affiliated with ABC Carpet (investors).

I think a letter to ABC Carpet is in order. Anyone have any good contacts there who would read a letter like this?

So I found out the other day that one of my favorite downtown restaurants, Chicama, is no longer open. I'm really gonna miss the Mojitos and Ceviche. I have no idea when or why this happened but I'm pissed because to top it off, I recevied a $100 gift certificate from two very close friends to the restaurant for my birthday this past year...and haven't gotten to use it yet!!!! Bastards! Mojitos!!!

Did ya check out Smoke yet? Well what are you waiting for? I'm tellin ya...it's a great spot.

Man...there are just so many great places to go in this city that it's hard to pick just one...so screw it...why not pick four and hit'em all. This week let?s talk about Morgans Bar. Morgans Bar is downstairs at the Hotel Morgan, located at 237 Madison Ave. between 37th and 38th Sts.

The entrance to Morgans Bar is very non-descript...

Since this is the first review and I just happened to spend an amazing night at a two great NYC jazz clubs, what better way to kick off then with a quick review of SMOKE Jazz Club and Lounge...or just plain SMOKE to those who frequent. I'll cover the other spot, called Zinc Bar, next week.

So, the first stop (after a great dinner that is) on Saturday night was a rather well known, but out of the way spot called Smoke. Smoke is a great little spot on the Upper West side on Broadway between 105th and 106th, just a few blocks south of Morningside Heights. It's a very unassuming place from the outside, taking up roughly two store fronts, and it's not that much more impressive on the inside, but what it lacks in beauty and size it more then makes up for in style, great acoustics, top notch performers and great history (formerly known as Augies Jazz Bar).

New Feature: NYC @ Nite

| | Comments (1) | TrackBacks (0)

Starting this week I'm going to be starting a new feature called NYC @ Nite.

In this new panel which you'll find over on the right hand side of your screen below the calendar, I'll write about a new (to me anyhow) nite spot that I stumbled upon or was introduced to by a friend. It's unlikely that many of the places will be "brand new" to the city, just places that are newly discovered by yours truly.

In the first installment, just to get caught up...well..sorta caught up...we'll cover a few places that I've found over the last few weeks that were worth mentioning. Hope you like it and let me know what you think, if you happen to stop by.
